Green Tips for June 2012

The late spring weather is now inviting us to get out of the house and enjoy our favorite outdoor activities. People are outside performing spring cleaning and sprucing up houses and lawns from one end of the Village to the other. This season allows us to really enjoy the beautiful surrounds of our individual properties as well as our local neighborhoods. This is a good time to remember to make sensible choices that save time and money and protect our valuable environment. Greenscaping is a concept identified by the US EPA to “put Nature to work in your yard” to improve the health and appearance of your lawn and gardens, and safeguard our ecosystem. Their informative website: www.epa.gov/gateway/learn , lists the five steps to success in this process:

  1. Build and maintain healthy soil with compost and mulch
  2. Plant the “right” plants for your site
  3. practice “smart watering” for healthier plants
  4. adopt a “complete” approach to pest management
  5. practice “natural” lawn care

Remember, these agencies, the US EPA and the Ohio EPA (www.epa.state.oh.us/ ) are yours. They have a plethora of information available at their websites or as brochures and newsletters. Visit, engage and utilize them as valuable public resources; and enjoy the beautiful Moreland Hills outdoors!
