Green Tips

For the remaining 10% of residents who DO NOT recycle, but would like to start….

For those of us who do recycle, the Village offers many wonderful services. Perhaps you would also like to take advantage of these services, but do not know where to start or how to organize your recyclables.

For several years, the Village has supplied recycling carts to the residents. It is no longer required to separate items; all recyclables can be tossed into the cart. Not sure what can be recycled? The lid of the cart lists the items that can be put inside.

Organizing your recyclables makes recycling easy for you to do. Having a separate container that will hold only your recyclable items is a helpful way to keep you organized. Newspapers can be placed into a paper grocery bag and then placed inside the cart. Phone books can also be placed inside the cart, as the Metroparks no longer collects them.

Twice a year, on the first Saturday in May and October, Moreland Hills holds a recycling/shredding event called Greening the Hills at Village Hall. Mass shredding of documents is done onsite by a company with a large shredding machine. Boxes of paper are emptied into the machine; the Village Service Department will recycle the cardboard boxes if you wish. Another idea is to bring your items to be shredded in a paper grocery bag, which can go into the shredder with your papers.

The Village also has a Recycling Guide, which is a great resource, especially if you are just getting started. If you follow the suggestions in the booklet that work best for you, you will save a lot of waste and save the Village landfill costs.
