A Message from Mayor Daniel Fritz

...Continued

While socializing in 2020 was dramatically redefined, members of our Police Department worked hard to ensure that options remained for our residents. Working with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Police Chief Kevin Wyant orchestrated our annual fishing event so that it would adhere to the recommendations instituted by this agency. Yes, the event looked different, but what remained the same were the many smiles on the children’s faces as they reeled in catfish and bass. A heartfelt “thank you” to all who made this day a reality.

After the tragic events unfolded in Minnesota with the death of George Floyd, many residents contacted my office to ask about issues such as diversity, our use of force policy and training related issues within our own Police Department. During a scheduled ZOOM meeting with all who inquired, we proudly related the history of the Moreland Hills Police Department. History that does not include any excessive use of force or profiling complaints. Borne out of this meeting was the concept of an Inclusion Commission. This commission will be made up of residents who will help to ensure that the Village is doing everything that it can to foster inclusion, diversity and respect. Look for more information regarding this commission as we head into 2021.

Our Service Department worked extremely hard in 2020. At times, they did so under challenging conditions such as remote work sites and dramatic changes to the processes that had become redefined. Not one complaint came across my desk from the members of this department. In fact, several suggested ways to improve efficiency and to accommodate COVID related safe working requirements. Having amazing employees does not happen with one Mayor. The success of our Village leans quite heavily on the work from past Mayors and former members of Council. I’m incredibly proud of our employees and fully understand that we have something special in the Village of Moreland Hills.

In closing, let me reassure each one of you that as we move into 2021 our efforts will not subside. We will continue to provide the outstanding levels of service you have all grown to expect while keeping a watchful eye on our revenue streams. It is true that beauty arises out of hardship. We continue to see this concept on a daily basis in and around this amazing Village. From my family to yours, let me wish you all a very happy holiday season. May it be filled with smiles, good health and a bright beacon of hope.
